Where Is God?

Is He in the United States?
Is He in Israel?
Is He in Europe?
Is He in the Church?
Is He in my home?
Is He in my heart?

Where does God dwell?
In the Old Testament, God seemed to dwell in Heaven, at least in the early books.
He would appear (Genesis 1:2; 3:8, Exodus 3:1-6, II Chronicles 3:1, etc.) as it were at times, but then return to Heaven. He appeared to Moses on Mt. Sinai but later on, He dwelt in the Holy of Holies after the Ark of the Covenant was built.

Can God be restrained to an ark, a cloud, a temple, or even a mountain?
No! God is omnipresent. (1. always present everywhere: continuously and simultaneously present throughout the whole of creation. 2. found everywhere: present or seemingly present all the time or everywhere.

I could go on and on with this and may continue later, but for now, let’s move on.

After Jesus came in human flesh, died, rose from the grave, and ascended to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit (John 7:38-40) to dwell within us. If we surrender to Christ’s authority, God will take up residence within us, leading and guiding us “all the time.”

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Romans 8:9

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. –Romans 8:11

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? I Corinthians 3:16

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “ I will dwell in them and walk among them.I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” –II Corinthians 6:16

The people of the Old Testament could never imagine Holy God dwelling within men, especially gentiles. What a blessing and opportunity we have.

Friend, does God dwell in you?
If not, why not ask Him today.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.          --Psalm 139:23-24
